Kansas Sends Budget Warning Signs Less Than 1 Month Into New Budget

Only twenty days into the new fiscal year, and the State of Kansas is already sending up the distress signal. The budget, which was predicated largely on sales and sin taxes has had it's first revision, and the contraction within the budget puts Kansas more at risk of being in trouble next year.

In a report through the Legislative Research Department, the end of year cash reserve value was lowered from an $86M cushion to a $67M cushion - a $19M drop before the first month has ended.  Bryan Lowry, at the Wichita Eagle, covers this story effectively here.
